Message from the School Principals
June 2008
Dear Bullis School Families:
Here at Bullis, we hope to foster a love of reading. Our aim is for students to learn to find books of interest, to read for pleasure, and to reflect upon their reading. We feel that the habit and love of reading can contribute to deepening an understanding of oneself, others and the world at large. Participating in our community of readers is an expectation we have for each child.
Of course, we hope our students encounter characters to whom they react strongly, problems that intrigue them, and worlds that insist on thoughtful responses from the reader. We therefore encourage our students to make informed book choices by matching the advice of others with their own interests.
It should go without saying that there are hundreds of fantastic books your child may want to read. Encourage your child to read widely. On this Web site you will find suggestions from teachers and students. You will also find links to online resources. Visit your local library! It probably has a summer reading program and a helpful and knowledgeable staff (as do local bookstores).
We expect students to be able to share the books they've read over the summer with their classmates and teachers in September. Students should keep track of each book finished according to the grade-level instructions on the web site. Students should be prepared with their book lists and records on the first day of school. We look forward to hearing about your child's summer reading experience in September!Sincerely,
Amy Jones, Lower School Principal
Tamara Schurdak, Middle School Principal
Andrew C. Delinskly, Upper School Principal
