The third grade social studies program focuses on developing map reading skills and exploring how communities develop, beginning with the Bullis School community and then moving on to the rich cultural diversity of the Washington, D.C., area. Activities will include field trips, creating three-dimensional maps and examining artifacts from the local area. Students will have various ways to demonstrate knowledge including writing, creating visual images and making presentations.

Grade 4

The fourth grade studies geographical regions of the world in order to explore the relationship between the environment and society. We examine Native American cultures to reinforce this understanding. This geographical study continues with an examination of North America, culminating in a traditional state fair. Reading comprehension, writing and the use of technology, along with many math and science connections, are integral parts of the course. Research and study skills are learned and strengthened through class projects.

Grade 5

Fifth grade studies history through the concepts of leadership and organizing systems. The Presidential election provides context for this study which continues with an examination of European exploration of the New World and the founding of the United States. Both reading and writing skills are emphasized; language arts and technology are integrated on a consistent basis. Both narrative and traditional texts are used. The year ends with an annual trip to Jamestown and Colonial Williamsburg.
