Technology

The technology program in the Lower School focuses on developing core technology skills and an awareness of how technology influences student lives. This is done within the context of the Lower School curriculum.

Technology Objectives

  • To develop fundamental skills in the use of technology
  • To develop an awareness of the boundaries of acceptable use
  • To complete curriculum-based projects using technology tools
  • To use the computer as a writing, editing, publishing and designing tool
  • To explore the ways in which different types of technology and media influence people and the choices they make
  • To promote student leadership by allowing students to assist in training one another
  • To strengthen community in the classroom through many collaborative projects

Grade 3

The third grade technology program is designed to familiarize students with the basic concepts of the computer and its usage. Students will be introduced to the fundamentals of keyboarding, basic word processing, e-mail, the Bullis Network, basic drawing, basic digital photography and general Internet use. In addition, students will be taught what constitutes acceptable use.

Grade 4

The fourth grade technology program builds upon the concepts introduced in the third grade. In addition to those areas, fourth graders will work on basic scanning, electronic research and multi-media projects that incorporate a variety of programs. Students will continue to develop basic technology skills while applying those skills to the fourth grade curriculum. Students will learn what media is and will begin to discuss the impact of media on their lives.

Grade 5

The fifth grade program continues the development of third and fourth grade concepts with an emphasis on multi-media and on using technology as a research tool. Fifth graders will also work on spreadsheets and graphs, and on the creation of a Lower School newsletter. In addition to learning the how-to skills, students will grow in both their ability to integrate technology into education and their understanding of how this technology affects their lives.
