Hall of Fame

The Hall of Fame was created in the 1983-1984 school year to honor individuals, teams, and coaches who achieved athletic success at Bullis and in the college or professional ranks. The Hall of Fame remains a vital part of honoring the school’s history and the individuals or teams listed below who have helped establish its athletic history.

Bernard Esunas, Class of 1933, Prep Football

Bernie was a student for two years at the fledgling Bullis School in 1933 and 1934. He was an outstanding football player, lettering both years.

Bernie then attended the University of Texas where he lettered in football and track. He was selected to the All-Southwest Conference team in 1938 and to the All-American College Catholic Players Team, also in 1938. In 1977, he was elected to the Texas Longhorn Hall of Honor Court and still serves as a member of the Court to vote and to select the new members of the Texas Athletic Hall of Honor.

Bernie was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Air Force in 1941, was a B-17 pilot, a B-29 Squadron Commander and served as aide-de-campe to Major General Ralph Royce. He retired as a Major in 1946 but served in the Reserves until 1966.

Clyde Scott, Class of 1944, Prep Football and Track

Clyde came to Bullis in 1943 after having spent his freshman year at the University of Arkansas with hopes of attending the United States Naval Academy. He made quite a name for himself and his small hometown of Smackover, Arkansas. He was an outstanding football player and hurdler on the track team.

Clyde entered the Naval Academy in 1944 where he led the team in rushing for two years. In 1945 he was cited on the All-American Team as a running back. In 1946, he decided to return to the University of Arkansas where he was named All-American and All-Southwest Conference three consecutive years, 1946, 1947 and 1948. His accomplishments were equally as impressive in track. In 1947 and 1948 he was the Southwest Conference 110 yard high hurdle champion. He also participated in the 1948 Olympics where he won a silver medal. After the Olympics, he played several seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles who had drafted him in 1948.

Cdr. William C. Earl, Class of 1945, Prep Football, Washington Post All-Met in Football

Billy spent a post-graduate year at Bullis after graduating from Washington-Lee High School where he was chosen to the All-Metropolitan football team. While at Bullis he lettered in Football and basketball, was selected to the All-Metropolitan Prep football team and was the 1945 recipient of the Washington, DC Touchdown Club “All-Prep Player of the Year Award”.

Billy realized his “lifetime dream” by attending the Naval Academy from 1946 to 1951 where he lettered in football and lacrosse. He attained All-American recognition in lacrosse and was chosen to play in the North-South All Star Game, in 1950 and 1951. While at the Academy he was awarded the Thompson Trophy for his outstanding contributions to athletics.

Billy served in the United States Navy until retiring in 1974 as a Commander. He served on the USS Missouri and the USS Midway, was Staff Supreme Allied Commander Atlantic and Staff Second Fleet. He was also manager of the United States Yachting team at the 1963 Pan American Games.

Arnold Ferrin, Class of 1945, Prep Basketball

Arnie attended Bullis in 1945, after a year at the University of Utah, hoping to secure an appointment to the Naval Academy. However, due to an injury he was not able to pass the physical. He returned to The University of Utah where his accomplishments in basketball became legendary.

In 1944, Arnie was a key member of Utah’s “Cinderellas” NCAA Championship basketball team. He was selected as the tournament’s outstanding player. In 1947, his Utah team won the N.I.T. championship and he was runner-up in the voting for the MVP award. In 1948, he was selected as the Most Valuable Player in the College East-West Game. Sixteen times during his collegiate career he was chosen on an All-American team, three times by the Helm’s Foundation of which he is an honoree in their Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame. He is also enshrined in the Utah Sports Hall of Fame.

To cap off an illustrious playing career, Arnie was a member of the 1949 and 1951 NBA Championship Minneapolis Lakers teams and was voted the most popular player on the Lakers in 1950.

Arnie has been employed as Director of Athletics at the University of Utah, Assistant to the Vice President for University Relations and General Manager of the NBA Utah Stars.

Capt. Wilson Whitmire, Class of 1953, Prep Football

Wilson was an outstanding two-way player on the Prep football team in 1952. He was a member of the Washington Metropolitan All-Prep team.

Wilson attended the United States Naval Academy after graduation and was a star lineman for the Midshipmen. He twice received honorable mention All-American recognition. In his senior year, he was named first team center on the Williams All-American Team. He also received a unique honor when he was selected on the All-East first team as both a center and linebacker.

Jim Bakhtiar, Class of 1954, Prep Football

Jim attended Bullis for a postgraduate year after an outstanding career at Western H.S. in Washington, DC. While at Western he was the football team captain and was selected All-Met 1st team and a High School All-American. At Bullis, Jim was team captain and the leading ground-gainer on the 1953 team, which won the Silver Bowl against the University of Maryland freshman.

After Bullis, Jim entered the University of Virginia where he captained the freshmen team as well as the Varsity. In his sophomore year he was selected as Sophomore Back of the year for the entire nation. He was All-ACC for 2 years and in his Senior year was a first team All-American selection as picked by Look Magazine and the Football Writers of America. At the conclusion of his senior season, Jim was chosen to play in the annual North-South game. Following his career at the University of Virginia he played one year with the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League.

Richard Brown, Class of 1956, Prep Football, Basketball, Baseball

Dick Brown was a three sport letterman at Bullis, lettering in prep football, basketball, and baseball. He started as an outside linebacker for the football team, was a starter on both the basketball and baseball team, and was also the captain of the baseball team. He was named as a 1st team All-Met in Basketball by The Washington Post.

At the Naval Academy, he lettered in both basketball and baseball for three years. As a member of the basketball team, he helped lead the team to the NCAA tournament in 1959 and 1960 and was the team MVP his senior season. He played all 40 minutes, a school-record, twenty eight times during his career. He still ranks third in rebounds per game average behind Navy greats Don Lange and David Robinson. As a member of the Academy baseball team, he was the team captain and MVP as a senior, made the Ivy-League All-Star team and was also the team batting champion as a senior.

Dick Brown returned to Bullis as a coach in 1963 where he helped coach the football, basketball, and baseball team. After a year at Bullis he returned to the Naval Academy where he coached for eight years. He returned to high school coaching in Maine at Mt. Blue High School where he spent six years until he moved to Eugene, Oregon in 1978 to work as an exercise physiologist and where he began his work as the director of Athletics West, Nike’s Elite Track and Field running club. In 1983, and again in 1984, members of Athletics West made up 25% of the National team which placed first at both the World Championships and the 1984 Olympics. In 1983 Dick was the head coach of the USA Cross Country team which won the combined World Championships’ in Gateshead, England. Coach Brown has coached 11 different athletes who have made five Olympic teams, five world championship teams and six world cross country championship teams.

He received the 1984 Bruce Jenner Award for the Advancement of Track and Field, the 1985 Jesse Abramson Award for Meritorious Service to Track and Field, and he currently coaches the post-high school and post-graduate athletes at the Eugene Health and Performance Foundation in Oregon.

Lew Luce, Jr., Class of 1957

Played Prep Football, Basketball and Baseball. Washington Post All-Met in Football, Basketball and Baseball.

Lew was an outstanding three-sport athlete during his post-graduate year at Bullis. He played prep football, basketball, and baseball and earned All-Met honors from The Washington Post in all three sports. He was prep All-American in both football and basketball. He attended Penn State University on an athletic scholarship to play football. Upon graduation from Penn State he played professionally for the Washington Redskins during the 1960 season. After playing with the Redskins he coached football for Florida State for five years before entering high school coaching and administration.

William Mack, Class of 1957, Prep Football

William “Red” Mack was an outstanding football player while at Bullis and was named to the 1956 All-Metropolitan Prep Football Team. That same year he also received the Washington, DC Touchdown Club “Prep Player of the Year Award”.

Red went to Notre Dame and was named as a preseason All-American in 1960 after leading Notre Dame in rushing as a sophomore. However, knee injuries cut his junior and senior seasons short. The Pittsburgh Steelers in the 1961 NFL Draft drafted him in the 5th round. Red played six seasons of professional football with the Steelers, the Eagles and on Vince Lombardi’s Super Bowl I Champion Green Bay Packers.

Thomas Brown, Class of 1959, Prep Football, Basketball and Baseball

Tom attended Bullis for a post-graduate year after a brilliant career at Montgomery Blair High School. A true three sport athlete, he played football, captained the basketball team and was an outstanding baseball player.

After graduation, Tommy attended the University of Maryland where he starred in both football and baseball. In his senior year, he went straight from the campus at Maryland to be the starting first baseman on opening day for the Washington Senators. After one year of organized baseball, he turned his talents to professional football where he starred from 1964 - 1969 as a defensive back with the Green Bay Packers. Tom was a key member of Vince Lombardi’s Super Bowl I and II Championship teams. Tommy holds a unique record in athletics in that he is the only person in professional sports to have played major league baseball and to have participated in the Super Bowl.

Nicholas Markoff, Class of 1960, Prep Football, Basketball and Baseball

Nick attended Bullis for a post-graduate year in 1959. He was a running back for the prep football team, a guard for the prep basketball team, and the third baseman for the prep baseball team. He received the Danforth Trophy as the “Outstanding Student Athlete” in the Class of 1960.

After graduating from Bullis he attended the Naval Academy. In his plebe year, he played both football and baseball, but focused on football after his first year. He played fullback and outside linebacker and became a starter as a senior. During his senior season he made the All-East football team for two weeks for his outstanding performance in two games. In his final season at the Academy, his team played for the National Championship in the Cotton Bowl against the University of Texas. He started in the same backfield as future Hall of Fame quarterback, and Naval Academy star, Roger Staubach. He held a Naval Academy record for 36 years for catching the longest forward pass in the annual Army/Navy game.

Peter Coker, Class of 1961, Prep Basketball

Peter attended Bullis for a post-graduate year after an outstanding high school career at Allentown High School in Pennsylvania. He was easily the outstanding player on the Prep basketball team in 1960-61. As Coach May has often said, “Peter Coker is without a doubt the finest basketball player I have seen in my 24 years at Bullis.”

After Bullis Pete attended Dartmouth for two years before transferring to North Carolina State University where his academic and athletic achievements became a model for many to follow. Pete led the Wolfpack in rebounding and had a 15.5 scoring average during a senior season in which two opposing coaches called him the most complete player in the Atlantic Coast Conference. He twice received the Jon Speakes Award, presented for sportsmanship in honor of a former player who was killed in an accident. He was the first player to receive the Everett Case Scholarship, the H.C. Kennett, Sr., Athletic Award, maintained a “B” average in economics at State and was twice named to the ACC’s All-Academics team. Press Maravich, Pete’s coach at State said of him, “Pete is everything a coach could want in a player. He’s a good competitor and he’s a boy of good character.”

In November of 1966, Peter was named the City of Allentown’s Champion of Champions.

Robert Windsor, Class of 1962, Prep Football and Basketball

Bob attended Montgomery Blair HS before coming to Bullis. While at Blair, he played football, basketball, and ran track. The Blair football team that he played on was Bi-County Champions for two years. His basketball and track teams were State Champions for two years. He attended Bullis for a prep year. He was named a Washington Post All-Met as a halfback for the football team. He was also named All-Met in basketball and was the co-captain and second leading scorer averaging 17.9 pts/game.

He attended The University of Kentucky where he played both football and basketball. He played on the Wildcats 1966 National Championship basketball team. He was All-SEC in football and led the conference in receiving as a junior.

He played professional football for the San Francisco 49’ers and the New England Patriots. He was selected All-Pro three times.

Dean Sclavounos, Class of 1963

Three-sport athlete starring in Football, Basketball and Baseball

Dean was a three-sport athlete at Bullis. He played varsity football his freshman through junior year. He was All-League as both a sophomore and junior and was named the team’s Most Valuable Player as a junior. He played varsity basketball as a junior and senior. He played varsity baseball his freshman through senior years.

He attended Northwestern Louisiana State where he played varsity baseball for four years. He was All-Conference as a sophomore and junior and was named the team captain as a senior.

Jake Scott, Class of 1965

Three-sport athlete in Football, Basketball and Baseball. All-American defensive back for University of Georgia and NFL All-Pro.

Jake had an outstanding career as a three-sport athlete during his two years at Bullis. He played football, basketball and baseball and was one of a few high school players in Bullis history to play on the Prep Football team. He was captain his senior year and played both ways as a running back and defensive back.

Jake attended the University of Georgia where he was named to the All-Southeast Conference Team as a defensive back. He was selected as an All-American in his junior year after which he left Georgia to play professionally in the Canadian Football League with The British Columbia Lions. After a year in Canada, Jake returned to play with the Miami Dolphins in the NFL under Don Shula. He played a major role in the Dolphins’ victory over the Washington Redskins in Super Bowl VIII. He was several times named All-Pro. Ironically, he finished his stellar career with Washington.

Andrew V. Marusak, Class of 1966, Football and Prep Basketball

Prior to his arrival at Bullis, Andrew Marusak had received numerous athletic honors while a student at Annandale High School in Virginia. His first varsity basketball season at Annandale, he led the state of Virginia in scoring on his way to earning All-State, Washington Post All-Met, and High School All-American honors.

He entered Bullis his junior year where he became the starting quarterback and free safety for the undefeated 1964 High School team. He intercepted at least one pass in each game that season as a free safety. He was elected captain of the football team as a senior, but unfortunately his season was cut short due to a broken collarbone. He also starred on the prep basketball team as a junior and senior, which recorded wins over freshman teams from Georgetown, American, William and Mary, and George Washington.

He went on to play basketball at Northwestern State University of Louisiana where he was voted best conference freshman.

Joe Albano, Football

Joe Albano was a 1966 graduate of James Caldwell High School in West Caldwell, New Jersey, where he was co-captain of the football and baseball teams. He was inducted into the James Caldwell High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 1990. Upon graduation from high school, Joe attended The Bullis School for one year of post-graduate studies. At The Bullis School he served as a President of the Student Council and as a member of the football and baseball teams. He received The Bullis School Alumni Athletic Award for Outstanding Achievement in Athletics before entering West Point.

At West Point he earned three varsity letters in football and served on the Cadet Honor Committee. Prior to graduation, Mr. Albano received the Thurston Hughes Memorial Award as the Most Valuable Player of the 1970 Army Football Team along with the Ringsdorf Award as the Most Valuable Player of the Army-Navy game in 1970. At the conclusion of his career, Mr. Albano held several Academy pass receiving records, including the most pass receptions in a game and season and the most passes ever caught in a career by an Army player against the Naval Academy. He was also selected his senior season to the first-team UPI and AP All-East Football Team and received the UNICO International Award as the outstanding athlete in America.

Upon graduation from West Point in 1971, Mr. Albano was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army, and served 5 years of active duty at Fort Benning, Georgia, Germany and West Point.

John Brocard, Class of 1971, Football and Track

John attended Bullis from seventh through twelfth grade. He was a running back on the Varsity football team his sophomore through senior years. As a senior he was selected Captain and also led the team in scoring. He made second team All-IAC in football as a senior. He also ran varsity track his final three years in high school.

He attended Furman University where he played defensive back on their football team for four years. During his senior season, Furman’s secondary was ranked second in the country for fewest passing yards allowed per game.

While attending law school in the area after graduation from Furman, he helped coach football at Bullis.

Brad Kline, Class of 1972, Football, Basketball, Swimming and Baseball

While at Bullis, Brad lettered in football, baseball, basketball and swimming. As a junior he was honored by being named the recipient of the West Point Society Academic Athletic Leadership Award. Additionally, he was president of his class for 3 years, Captain and Most Valuable Player of the football team and was chosen All-IAC and All-Prep in Football.

Brad attended the University of South Carolina after Bullis where he continued to excel in academics and athletics. He was on the Dean’s List, the President’s Honor Roll and received the Academic Award presented to the letterman on the football team with the highest grade point average. He was a three-year starter at offensive guard, captain his senior year and received the Offensive Leadership Award.

David Hellekjaer, Class of 1976, Football, Basketball and Track

Dave was one of the first outstanding athletes to be produced by the second-generation Bullis School after the changeover from Silver Spring to Potomac and from a post-graduate school to a high school. He was a true student-athlete during his five years at Bullis. He was a three-sport athlete in both the middle and upper schools, participating in football, basketball and track. In 1975, he was named All-IAC in Football and was the IAC discus champion setting a new conference record. Dave still holds the school record with a throw of 180’ set in 1976 when he was recognized as one of the nation’s premier discus throwers. In, 1975, he was selected as the nation’s leading high school punter averaging better than 42 yards a punt.

Dave attended Lehigh University where he continued to excel as a discus thrower. He still holds the Lehigh University record with a throw of 178’. He was elected captain of the track team for his senior year and was selected to participate in the 1980 Olympic Trials.

Tragically, Dave was killed in an automobile accident over Christmas vacation of his senior year. Loved and admired by his classmates and school, a memorial award was instituted and is presented each year to a senior at the Senior Supper by one of Dave’s classmates.

James F. Rill, Class of 1977, All-IAC and Team Most Valuable Player in Football and Basketball

Jim was a very respected student-athlete earning the Headmaster’s Award his freshman through junior years and the Founder’s Award as a senior. Jim played Varsity football and basketball his freshman through senior years. As a senior he was selected team captain in both football and basketball. He was also named Most Valuable Player for both football and basketball as a senior. He was All-IAC in both sports and was selected for The Washington Post All-Met third team in football his senior year.

He attended Dartmouth College where he was a three-year starter, twice named All-Ivy second team and All-New England Honorable mention as an offensive lineman.

He was signed with the New England Patriots in 1981.

J. Clay Britt, Class of 1979, All-IAC and All-American Swimmer

While attending Bullis, Clay was a four-time letterman in swimming, serving as captain two years. He was All-IAC and a four-time winner of the school’s most valuable swimmer award. Four times during his high school career he attained All-American status and was a member of the 1979 United States Pan American Team.

Clay attended the University of Texas on a full NCAA scholarship where he won three National Championships in the 100-yard backstroke. He was also a member of three National Championships relay teams. Clay was a four-time letterman, four times All-American, co-captain of the 1982-83 team and a member of Texas’ Southwest Conference and NCAA Championship teams. Clay is a former American record holder in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 49.08 recorded at the 1981 NCAA meet. He still holds the Southwest Conference record in the 50-yard backstroke. He is one of only three swimmers to ever win three NCAA 100 yard backstroke titles.

Aaron Jackson, Class of 1988

Lettered in Football, Basketball and track. All-IAC and Washington Post All-Met in Football.

Aaron attended Bullis for two years. He lettered in football, basketball, and track. He was All-IAC in basketball his junior year. He received the award for the Most Outstanding Field Event participant as a junior on the Track team. As a senior he started at tight end and linebacker for the 1979 IAC Co-Championship football team. He was selected as the team’s Most Valuable Player, a first team All-IAC tight end, Washington Post first team All-Met linebacker and The Pigskin Club of DC award as the Outstanding High School Football Player. He also received the Alumni Award for Outstanding Senior Athlete.

He continued his career at the University of North Carolina where he played linebacker.

Dan Goldie, Class of 1982, All-IAC Tennis and Collegiate All-American

Dan played number the number one singles position on the 1982 National Scholastic Championship Tennis team. He won the singles title at the National Scholastic Tournament. During his senior year he was All-IAC and a member of the 1982 IAC Championship team.

Dan earned a fine reputation in college tennis at Stanford University and more recently professional tennis. Danny ended his storybook collegiate career with a singles championship in the NCAA. Three times an All-American, he was voted the PAC-10 Player of the Year in 1985 and was named Stanford University’s PAC-10 Student Athlete of 1986.

As a professional tennis player, Dan was ranked as high as 26th in the world. He made it to the Quarterfinals at Wimbledon. He made it to the round of 16 at the US Open twice and once did so at the Australian Open. He also played on two Davis Cup teams.

Peter B. Minturn, Class of 1982, Three-Sport Athlete and All-League Football Standout as a senior

Pete was a three-sport athlete during his High School career at Bullis. He played Varsity Baseball his freshman through senior years. He also played Varsity Basketball and Football his sophomore through senior years. Pete was the starting quarterback for two years and started at linebacker for three. As quarterback Pete was fully aware that Bullis’ offense was built around him. He had excellent hands and could easily have been a wide receiver except for the fact that he was needed by the team at quarterback. He was selected first team All-IAC as a defensive back his senior season.

Pete attended Ithaca College where he was a wide receiver on the football team for four years. As a freshman he led the team in kickoff return yards with an average of 28.4 yards per return. As a junior he led the team in receptions, receiving yards, and kickoff return average. Ithaca won the ECAC Northwest Championship during Pete’s junior year. As a senior, Pete led the team with receptions, receiving yards, kickoff return average, and was selected Honorable Mention All-American. Ithaca reached the Stag Bowl and played for the NCAA Division III Championship.

Lenny Bernstein, Class of 1984

All-League, Prep All-American and undefeated High School Wrestler for three straight years

Lenny attended Bullis for three years in which time he achieved every accolade possible for a high school wrestler. He was a three-year starter for the Varsity Wrestling team. He is the only undefeated wrestler in Bullis School history. He was 33-0-0 as a sophomore,40-0-0 as a junior, and 37-0-0 as a senior. He was the IAC, St. Albans Tournament, and National Prep school champion for three straight years. He was champion of the prestigious Bethlehem Catholic and Annapolis tournaments his sophomore and junior years. He holds the record for most Tournament Championships at 13. He was named the Most Valuable Wrestler on the team all three years he was at Bullis. He was National Freestyle Wrestling Champion for his age group in both 1982 and 1984.

He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 1987, as a junior he was named an All-American by placing 4th at the NCAA’s. He also won the award for the most falls at the NCAA’s as a junior. As both a junior and a senior he was named outstanding student-athlete.

Mike Ivey, Class of 1991, Football and Basketball Star

Mike was a valued member of both the football and basketball teams. He served as captain of the football team his junior and senior years. He was selected All-IAC during his junior year and was the Most Valuable Player his senior year. Mike also captained basketball for two years. His senior year he was the Most Valuable Player, a well-deserved award as he averaged twenty points a game. He was also first team All-IAC that year.

Mike attended Catholic University where he started on their football team at safety. He started all ten games as a freshman. In his first college game versus Gallaudet he made five tackles, had an interception, and had four pass break-ups. As a freshman he was fifth on the team in tackles and second on the team in pass break-ups. He started the first two games of his sophomore season before dying suddenly from a severe asthma attack on September 18th, 1992. In his final collegiate game on September 12th, he recorded a career-high ten tackles against Swarthmore.

Catholic University retired his jersey (#1) which is the only one in University football history.

The 1947 Prep Football Team

Bullis’ First Prep Football team to go unbeaten & untied in regular season play

Only team in the country to beat both West Point and Navy Plebes in 1947.

Played Marianapolis Academy in the “Shoe Bowl” in Lynn, Massachusetts to a 6 - 6 tie to become the 1947 Co-Title Holder, Eastern U.S. National Prep School Football Champions.

Juliane Rolapp Huguely, Class of 1987

All-League Athlete in Basketball, Softball and Soccer and Winner of 12 Varsity Letters in Four Sports

Juliane Rolapp was Bullis’s first locally and nationally recognized female athlete. She was the first female athlete at Bullis to have earned All-League honors in three different sports.

In basketball, she was a four-time letter winner and three-time team captain. She was team MVP four straight years. She was named to the All-County team three times, All-ISL League team her Junior and Senior years, and a Washington Post All-Met selection her junior and senior years. As a senior, she received the prestigious ESPN Student-Athlete Award, which is awarded to only thirty athletes nationwide every year. In softball, she was a three time MVP, selected twice for the All-ISL League team, an All-County selection, and a Washington Post Honorable mention All-Met. In soccer, she led the team in scoring all three years played, was two-time MVP, and selected to the All-League team her Senior year.

At Johns Hopkins University, Juliane continued her athletic success by leading its women’s basketball team for four years. She earned four letters, was a three-time team captain, three-time team MVP, and as a senior received the Catherine P. Cramer Award presented to the senior woman making the greatest career contribution to Johns Hopkins University athletics.

Clayton R. Simmers II, Class of 1988

All-League Football and Lacrosse Player, Captain of Three Varsity Teams as a senior and Washington Post First Team, All-Met selection in Lacrosse

A four-year letter-winner on the lacrosse team, Clayton Simmers was the team captain and MVP both his junior and senior years. As a senior, he became the first Bullis lacrosse player to be selected for the Washington Post All-Met team. He was selected for first team All-League honors in football as a senior and also received the team award for Best Defensive player. He received the US Army Best Student-Athlete Award as a senior and was named the Outstanding Junior Athlete by the Varsity “B” club.

At Yale University, he was a four-year letter-winner and three year starter for the lacrosse team. As a senior he was selected to the All-New England team, the All-Ivy team, and was named third team All-American. His senior year, he received the Walter T. Collins Award as the Best Offensive Player of the Season for Yale and was selected to play in the prestigious North-South All-American game.

John A. Diehl, Class of 1954, Prep Football

Hailing from Philadelphia, John Diehl arrived at Bullis for a prep year and anchored the defensive line for “The Little Admirals” during the 1953 season. This was the first Bullis team to morally defeat the Annapolis Plebes earning a tie against the Navy eleven. The greatest victory for the Admirals that year was over the Maryland freshman team in the first Silver Bowl charity game, defeating them 26-7. After graduating from Bullis, John continued his football career at The University of Virginia.

He spent four years with the Baltimore Colts and one with the Oakland Raiders.

Jerry May, 1960 – 1997, Varsity Football, Basketball and Baseball Coach

Jerry May coached and mentored Bullis student-athletes for almost forty years. During his time at Bullis, he coached seven different varsity sports and numerous middle school teams. He was responsible for starting both our Middle and Upper School basketball tournaments. He was both the Middle School Head and athletic director for many years.

Coach May arrived at The Bullis School in 1960. He coached the Varsity Football team and the Prep Basketball team for over a decade. He was the first Bullis basketball coach to record over 100 wins in his career. He also coached the Varsity Baseball, Tennis, Cross Country, and Track teams. He has coached numerous All-League and All-Prep players here at school.

Kira Orr, Class of 1993

All-League Athlete in Basketball, Soccer, Softball and Cross Country. Winner of 12 Varsity Letters in Five Sports.

Kira Orr was an exceptional student-athlete who excelled in every sport she participated. She earned letters in Volleyball, Cross Country, Soccer, Basketball, and Softball. As a senior, she was named team captain, earned MVP honors, and named to the All-League teams in Soccer, Basketball, and Softball. In Basketball, she was named All-League for four years, All-County for three, Washington Post All-Met for two, and a Parade, Nike, and Street & Smith All-American her senior year.

She was a full scholarship athlete at Duke University where she started four years. She made the ACC All-Tournament team four straight years and was selected for the All-ACC League team her junior and senior years. She was a gold medallist on two Olympic Festival teams that competed in 1994 and 1995. She was a silver medallist on the 1997 USA R. William Jones Cup Team that competed in Taiwan.

After graduating from Duke, she was drafted in the fourth round by the Seattle Reign of the American Basketball League. She was the 33rd selection overall and played with the Reign for the two seasons that the ABL was in existence.

Justin Golden, 1982 - 1990

Coached the Bullis Varsity Wrestling team to eight IAC Championships, seven St. Albans Tournament Championships, and four National Prep team Championship titles.

Justin Golden coached Bullis wrestling for nine seasons. During that time his teams compiled a 164 -19-1 dual meet record. He led the team to eight straight IAC team titles, seven straight St. Albans Tournament team titles, and from 1985 through1988, Bullis won The National Prep Tournament team title. During his time he had thirty wrestlers who won sixty individual IAC titles, nineteen wrestlers who won thirty-one individual St. Albans Tournament titles, and nine National Prep Champions who won twelve individual titles.

Through Coach Golden’s efforts the Bullis wrestling team, which once was the doormat of the IAC, began a tradition of excellence that will forever be strived for, but possibly never matched.

Mario Lone, Class of 1988, All-League, First team All-County and Washington Post All-Met in Soccer

Mario Lone was an exceptional player who helped start the tradition of excellence in Bullis soccer. He was All-Prince George’s County Honorable Mention as a freshman. He was Honorable Mention All-League and Washington Post All-Met as a sophomore. As a junior and senior he was named first team All-County, All-IAC, and Washington Post All-Met. He was the team Most Valuable Player as a senior and also its Best Offensive Player from his sophomore through his senior year.

After graduation from Bullis, Mario attended George Washington University. As a freshman, Mario was the Atlantic-10 Western Division “Rookie of the Year” and the conference-scoring leader with seven goals and two assists. In his sophomore year, he was the Atlantic-10 “Player of the Year” after leading the conference in scoring with nineteen goals and eight assists. Mario, as a junior, was a First Team All-Conference selection. Mario was the Atlantic-10 “Player of the Year” and All-Region First Team selection as a senior. He was the Atlantic-10 leading scorer three of four years and GW’s leading scorer all four years as a starter. Mario was an All-American second and third team selection in 1989 and 1991 respectively. He finished his career as GW’s all-time leading scorer with 117 career points, including a record fifty goals and seventeen assists.

After graduation Mario was drafted by the Takoma Stars of the MSL.

Howard “Buddy” Humphries, Class of 1962, Prep Football

Buddy Humphries attended Bullis after graduating from Western High School. Buddy repeated both his junior and senior years in order to be able to attend a good college. Buddy attacked his studies the same way he attacked on the football field.

Buddy played football for two years on both offense and defense and was the team punter. He was an elusive wide receiver with speed to burn as well as an incredible punter. As a senior, he led the team in scoring, receiving yards, and punting average as well as being a terror on defense.

He attended the University of Maryland on an athletic scholarship where he played wide receiver and punted.

After graduating from Maryland, Buddy was drafted by the New York Giants.

Salvator Edward Fastuca, Class of 1946, Prep Football

Sal Fastuca attended Bullis for a prep year in 1946. He was on outstanding lineman who was selected to the Washington, DC Metropolitan Area “All-Prep Football Team.” He played in the prestigious “All-High/All-Prep Football Game” which pitted the areas best high school grid stars versus the prep stars.

He attended the United States Military Academy where he was coached by the legendary Col. Earl (Red) Blake. Sal was nominated for the “All-Catholic Honorable Mention All-American Team” in 1948.

After graduation he remained at West Point to be an assistant coach for two years.

Christina Lee, Class of 1991, All-League, Washington Post All-Met in Basketball and All-League in Softball

Christina Lee attended Bullis for three years and earned varsity letters in three sports. She lettered in track and basketball as a sophomore. As a junior and senior, she lettered in both softball and basketball. During her junior year she earned All-League honors in softball. It was in basketball that her athletic abilities were most noted. She earned All-League, Washington Post All-Met, and All-County honors all three years she attended Bullis. She was The Potomac Almanac Player of the Year as a sophomore and the team MVP as both a sophomore and junior.

She attended James Madison University. She made the CAA All Defensive team in both her sophomore and senior seasons. She also made the CAA All-Tournament team as a senior. She once was CAA Player of the Week as a sophomore. Her 200 career assists rank her 10th on JMU’s all-time list.

Bullis’s First Independent School League Championship

The 1989 Varsity Girls’ Soccer team picked up where the 1988 team left off. After winning the ISL Tournament Title to finish the 1988 season, the 1989 team completed the season without a loss. They hold the record for most consecutive wins for a girl’s team with twenty-five.
They outscored their opponents 60-7 en route to a 14 - 0 - 1 record.

The 1976 Varsity Boys’ Soccer Team

Bullis’s First Interstate Athletic Conference Championship

The 1976 Varsity Boys Soccer team earned the first league title in any varsity sport for Bullis. Their IAC record was 9 – 0 – 1 with an overall record of 12 – 2 – 1. Six members of this team earned All-IAC honors.

Clifford A. Lenz, Class of 1937, Prep Football

Cliff Lenz came to The Bullis School from Latrobe High School in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. He attended Bullis for a prep year in 1937 where he starred on the football team as its fullback. The offense was built around Cliff and his punishing running style. He was selected as the “Best Athlete” of his class at Bullis before he went off to the Naval Academy.

Cliff entered the Naval Academy in 1938 where he lettered as its starting fullback and halfback for three years. He earned All-East honors as a sophomore and junior and was selected by Walter Camp as a 1st Team All-American as a junior. He also lettered in track and was the Plebe heavyweight-boxing champion.

Upon graduating from the Naval Academy Cliff was commissioned on the aircraft carrier Enterprise in the Pacific Fleet. The Enterprise and its squadron patrolled the Pacific for two years compiling a battle record equaling that of any ship in naval history.

Steve Armas, Class of 1995, All-League, Washington Post All-Met and All-American Soccer Player

Steve Armas was an exceptional soccer player while attending Bullis and his soccer talents helped elevate the program to levels never before achieved. He was first team All-IAC as a sophomore. As a junior he was first team All-IAC and also Washington Post first team All-Met. As a senior he was All-IAC, Washington Post All-Met Player of the year, Parade All-American, Gatorade Player of the Year for the South Region, and NSCAA All-American. Steve also received the Alumni Award for Outstanding Achievement in Athletics as a senior.

Steve attended The University of Maryland where he was a four-year letter winner and starter. He finished his career with 11goals and 17 assists and is the seventh ranked leader in career assists. Steve earned Diadora.3 Brothers Classic All-Tournament honors in 1997.

He was co-captain his senior season and helped lead Maryland to the NCAA semi-finals.

After graduation Steve played with the Columbus Crew in Major League Soccer.

Kristen Thorne, Class of 1993, All-League, Washington Post All-Met and All-American Track Athlete

Kristen Thorne was an outstanding track and field athlete. She was not only a varsity Track letter winner her entire high school career, but she was also the team’s Most Valuable Athlete all four years of high school. She was All-League for four straight years and held school records in the 100 and 200-meter dashes, the 400 meter run, and the 100 and 300 meter hurdles. She also held the ISL League Championship meet records in the 100 and 200-meter dashes, and both the 100 and 300-meter hurdles. She was All-League her entire high school career and was a Washington Post All-Met track athlete as a junior. She was an All-American in the hurdles for four straight years and was AAU National Champion in the 100-meter hurdles.

Kristen attended Florida State University on a track scholarship. As a freshman she finished fourth at the ACC’s in the 400-meter hurdles. In her sophomore year Kristen scored at the ACC Outdoors with an eighth place finish in the 100-meter hurdles. Kristen’s junior season was highlighted with third place finishes in both the 100 and 400-meter hurdles. As a senior she placed third in the ACC Outdoor Championships and at the All-Florida College Championships Kristen was the 400-meter champion and record breaker. She is ranked in the top ten in the Florida State track record book for both the 100 and 400-meter hurdles.

Bob Hayes, 1953 - 1977, Athletic Director and Coach

The Bullis School began as a one-year prep school for young men trying to get into the service academies. The school fielded a prep football team until 1970, and Bob Hayes was a part of that program for seventeen years. He was a head football coach for seventeen years and fifteen of those years were with the prep program. The prep football schedule was comprised of other prep programs and college freshman teams from schools such as West Point, the Naval Academy, and Penn State. During the Coach Hayes football era, twenty-four members of his teams were drafted and twenty played professional football in the NFL. Two members of his teams, Tom Brown and Jake Scott, went on to play in the Super Bowl. Tom Brown played on the Packers first and second Super Bowl teams. Jake Scott played for the Miami Dolphins and was named Super Bowl VII MVP.

As the prep baseball coach his teams won over two hundred games. Three of Coach Hayes’ baseball players, Tom Brown being one of them, went on to play professional baseball. Tom Brown was the first man to play both Major League baseball and professional football.

Coach Hayes was also the varsity basketball coach for seven years. He coached those teams to a 75 – 21 record.

Along with Coach Hayes’ many coaching responsibilities he was also an excellent teacher and athletic director.

Doug Moe, Class of 1957, Varsity Basketball and Baseball

Doug Moe came to The Bullis School for a prep year from Erasmus Hall High School in Brooklyn, New York. He was a member of the varsity basketball and baseball teams and helped lead our basketball team to a successful prep season. It was after he left Bullis that Doug Moe distinguished himself.

Doug Moe entered the University of North Carolina in the fall of 1958. He was a two-time All-ACC selection and a first team All-American his senior year. As a senior, Doug averaged 20.4 points and 14 rebounds per game. He is second only to Billy Cunningham for career rebounds per game at The University of North Carolina. In the Dixie Classic his senior year, he was named the tournament MVP.

After graduation from North Carolina, Doug played professionally in Europe. He was twice named European Player of the Year. He first played in the ABA for the New Orleans Buccaneers, was a 3-Time ABA All-Star, 2-Time member of the ABA All-Pro team, finished second in ABA scoring in 1967-68, and was a member of the 1968-69 Oakland Oaks ABA Championship team.

Doug coached in the NBA for 15 years with the San Antonio Spurs, Denver Nuggets, and Philadelphia 76ers. He was named NBA Coach of the Year while with the Nuggets in 1988.

Emily Goodman, Class of 1997, All-League, All-County and Honorable Mention All-Met Soccer Player

Emily Goodman was a three-sport star that excelled both in the classroom and on the athletic fields. She earned 12 varsity letters in soccer, basketball, and softball. As a freshman she was named Defensive Player of the Year and made the All-League team. She was also voted the Best Offensive Player on the basketball team and received Honorable Mention All-County. Emily earned Best Offensive Player honors for softball along with Honorable Mention All-League and All-County.Her sophomore year she was once again the Best Offensive Player and All-League recipient for the soccer team. She received the Coaches’ Award for basketball and her second Best Offensive Player honor for softball.

Emily captained both the basketball and softball teams her junior year, was Most Valuable Player for both soccer and softball, and was selected Honorable Mention All-League for soccer. As a senior, she was captain of all three sports. In the fall, Emily was also selected First-Team All-League and Honorable Mention All-Met by the Washington Post for soccer. She was also selected All-League for softball. Emily went on the play soccer for two years at the University of Pennsylvania where she lettered both years.

1988 Wrestling Team

19 – 0 Regular Season record, St. Albans Champions, IAC Champions, National Prep Champions

The 1988 wrestling team completed which may be considered the most successful consecutive four years of athletic accomplishments in Bullis’ athletic history.
This team completed the 1987 – 1988 regular season with an undefeated record. They won the prestigious St. Albans Tournament, the IAC Tournament, and the National Prep Championship Tournament four straight years. In 1988 this team had five St. Albans champions, eight IAC champions, and two National Prep champions. The team ended the year ranked number one in the state of Maryland all four years.

The 1943 Prep Football Team

Best Prep or Parochial school football team in the D.C. Metropolitan area in 1943.

Placed eight players in the 1st Scholastic All-Star Football game between the Washington, DC area Public and Private school standouts. No other school had more.

Eight players went on to play Division I football.

Outscored their opponents 120 to 33 including 4 shutouts.

Sebastian Astrada, Class of 1998

“Sebbie” is one the best lacrosse players to have graduated from Bullis. As a senior captain he led the team to a top-20 ranking by The Washington Post, was selected 1st Team All-County by The Journal, The Gazette and The Almanac and 1st team All-Met by The Washington Post. The Almanac also selected him as Defensive Player of the Year. He earned All-IAC honors and was also named a high school All-American.
Sebbie went on to play for Middlebury College where he helped them win three NCAA Division III Championships (’00, ’01, ’02) and amass a record of 65-5. Middlebury head coach Erin Quinn said that “Sebbie was a great fit for our program. He was a dynamic player whose stick skills and athletic ability were well suited for Middlebury’s program.” These qualities helped Sebbie earn 1st team All-American honors as a senior.

Seth Davis, Class of 1988

As a student at Bullis, it was clear that Seth Davis was headed for a career in sports journalism and broadcasting. He was a member of the newspaper staff for his entire high school career and was the editor in chief as a senior. He was also the “voice” of the Bullis football team, providing animated highlights and anecdotes as the announcer for all of the home football games for four years.
As a student at Duke University, Seth was a sports columnist for The Chronicle, the University’s daily campus newspaper. After college he spent three years at The New Haven Register where he reported on the NFL, NBA, college basketball and the area high school sports scene. He began his career at Sports Illustrated in 1995 where he primarily covers college basketball and golf. He also has become a regular fixture on CNN/SI as a collegiate basketball analyst, where his insightful comments can be seen and heard regularly during the college basketball season.

Darnell “Sporty” Evans, Class of 1997

One of Bullis’s best two-sport athletes, Sporty earned All-League honors in both football and basketball in his senior year, led the football team to an undefeated season for the first time in over twenty years and the basketball team to an IAC title.
He was selected 1st team All-County by both The Gazette and The Journal, was named the Montgomery County Defensive Player of the Year by The Gazette and was the Player of the Year by The Journal. He was 1st Team All-Independent School for the State of Maryland and was selected by the Pigskin Club of Washington for the 59th annual All-Metropolitan High School team as the best all-around player. He was also selected as the team MVP for football. As the captain of the basketball team he was selected to play in the Capitol Classic All-Star game and made the All-Tournament teams in the Bullis Holiday Classic, Dr. Pepper Classic (Texas) and the Sidwell Friends Tournament.
Sporty went on to play football for the Towson University Tigers where he was elected captain his senior year. As a senior he was 1st Team All-Patriot League as a defensive back, Towson football “Big Play Award” recipient for the 2001 season and Patriot League and Don Hanson National Player of the Week award winner.

Coach Wayne Ferrell, Varsity Girls’ Basketball Coach, 1990-2003
Wayne Ferrell coached the girls’ basketball team for eleven seasons and was the catalyst for the success that has been associated with the girls’ program since the early 1990s. He started his coaching career at Bullis in the 1990-1991 season, winning the first of his seven ISL titles. In his first three seasons he went 70-13 and had two ISL co-championships. Coach Ferrell had to take two years off from coaching because of his job responsibilities as a Montgomery County police officer. Coach Ferrell’s second term as coach began as well as the first one ended with the team back on top and competing for the ISL championship once again. His record is an impressive 260-56. In the 1999-2000 season the Bulldogs won both the ISL regular-season title and the tournament title for the first time ever. They also finished the season ranked #1 by The Washington Post. Ferrell was named Coach of the Year by The Gazette during the 2000 and 2003 seasons and by The Montgomery Journal during the 2000 season. He also placed many girls into elite college programs across the country.

Hillis D. Hume, Class of 1941

Hillis D. Hume came to Bullis for a Prep year from Alliance High School where he still ranks as their all-time scoring leader for football with 300 points and is third for points scored in a season. Against Minerva High School in 1939 he scored a spectacular six touchdowns. Hillis was the premier running back on the 1940 Bullis team where he starred for the Prep team.
Hillis attended the Naval Academy where he was a two-sport letterman, starring on both the football and lacrosse teams. He was a starting running back for the 1943 and 1944 football teams and received All-East honors in his senior year. During the 1943 season the Academy went 8-1. In the 1945 Naval Academy yearbook it says of Hillis that he was “probably the greatest open field runner to wear the Blue and Gold in recent years. He was certainly one of Navy’s all time greats.” Hillis was also a star on the lacrosse team, where he earned All-American honors in 1944 and was inducted into the Naval Academy Lacrosse Hall of Fame.

Coach Doug London, Varsity Boys’ Soccer Coach, 1977-1996

Doug London coached the boys’ soccer team at Bullis for twenty seasons, compiling a 210-113-27 record. His team earned its seventh IAC title in 1994, when it posted a 19-0-1 record and was ranked #1 by The Washington Post. Coach London earned Coach of the Year honors by The Washington Post after that season, when his team was also ranked in the top ten nationally by the NSCAA.
Coach London was also a very successful club coach. His Potomac and Bethesda soccer clubs, of which many of his Bullis players were members, were state finalists for many years.
Doug played soccer at Kenyon College where his team won the Mid-West Championship during the 1974 season. He also made the All-Ohio Athletic Conference team in 1974 and held the Kenyon College record for assists, in a season and over a four-year period.

Sam Zausner, Class of 1999

Sam was an exceptional athlete, excelling in four sports while a Bullis student, and lettering in soccer, basketball, softball and golf. As a freshman, she was named the most valuable player on the softball team. As a junior, she was All-IAC in golf and nominated as the outstanding junior athlete by the coaching staff. As a senior, she was selected as the best offensive player on the soccer team, earned the Coaches Award in basketball and was All-IAC and the most valuable player on the golf team. As a senior, she was the second girl to be named to the Montgomery Journal All-County golf team.
Sam recorded top-10 finishes at the AJGA Tucker Anthony Championship in Massachusetts in 1997 and 1998, was the Maxfli PGA Middle Atlantic Champion in 1998 and 1999, and in 1998 was the Maryland Junior Girls’ State Champion.
Sam started her college career at the University of Florida and competed in the NCAA women’s golf championships in 2000 and 2001. She transferred to Georgia State University, where she tied for first at the 2003 Atlantic Sun Conference championships, competed in the NCAA championships and recorded the lowest round in school history at that time, with a 68, at the 2003 Lady Seahawk Invitational.

The 1988 Boys’ Basketball Team

The 1988 Bullis Boys’ Basketball team was coached by Bill Harris and assisted by Ruben Commettant and Dan Rascher. The team ended the season 18-4 with a 9-3 league record and its first Interstate Athletic Conference championship. Led by Coach Doug London and Assistant Coach Brian Pensky, the 1994 boys’ soccer team was the IAC champion for four years in a row, with a final regular-season record of 19-0-1. The team was The Washington Post’s #1 ranked team, and had an NSCAA top ten national ranking. Team members included: Steve Armas, Matt Bier, Brett Burns, Eric Coles, Gergo Dobozi, Pas Giordanno, Seth Goodman, Dalton Hamilton, John Hull, Brett Isaacson, Mike Jelencovich, Danny Kuzmich, Brian Lavin, Matt Malloy, Aaron Moatz, Damien Moore, Ricky Reyes, Adam Saks, Sam Sanders, Doug Watson, Sanjee Weliwitigoda and Andrew Wylie.

Monique Currie, Class of 2001

Monique Currie was one of the best basketball players to ever attend Bullis School. She helped lead the team to both ISL league and tournament titles in her junior year, which was a first for the school, and then helped defend the league title during her senior season.

She made the All-ISL team for basketball throughout her four year high school career. As a junior she was named All-USA Honorable Mention All-American by USA Today, a Maryland Miss Basketball Selection, the Girls Player of the Year by The Washington Post and a first team All-Met selection by the Post. She was also, as a junior, named the Gatorade Regional Player of the Year and 1st team All-County by both the Gazette and The Montgomery Journal. As a senior she was named a finalist for the Naismith Prep Player of the Year, earned Parade 2nd team All-American, WBCA All-American, 2nd team Street and Smith All-American, and Nike All-American honors. She was also selected as the USA Today and Gatorade Maryland Player of the Year while for the second year in a row earning The Washington Post Girls’ Player of the Year award along with 1st team All-Met honors.

At Duke, Monique became the first player in ACC history to register over 2000 points, 800 rebounds, 400 steals, and 200 assists in a career, became only the second Duke player to be named a two-time Kodak All-American selection, and helped lead Duke to 30 or more wins in all her seasons with the team. As a freshman and sophomore she earned 2nd team All-ACC honors. As a junior she was a Kodak, Associated Press, John R. Wooden, USBWA 1st team All-America. She was also 1st team All-ACC and the ACC Player of the Year. As a senior she was once again a Kodak, USBWA 1st team All-American, and a 2nd team Associated Press All-American.

Monique was first drafted by the Charlotte Sting, acquired by the Chicago Sky in the dispersal draft, and later traded to the Washington Mystics where she is currently playing.
