Athletics Handbook
Bullis School has a long and proud tradition in athletics. Bullis has fielded competitive athletic teams since the 1930s when the school began as a prep program for the service academies. Bullis’s athletic program has had great success with teams winning league championships in almost every sport. This success has also produced national championships in Prep football, boys’ tennis and wrestling.
At the Middle School level, participation on an interscholastic team is required every season. In the Upper School, athletic/activity participation is required during two seasons every year, with three being encouraged. The Athletic Department feels that all students should have the opportunity to participate in interscholastic athletics at some level during their high school years. With multiple levels of teams for almost all of our sports, there is a place for all of our athletes to represent Bullis in athletic competitions.
Athletics are seen as an important part of the total learning experience. At Bullis, academics are seen at the head with athletics and arts at the shoulders. The lessons that can be learned from athletic participation are invaluable and help in the overall development of the individual. Sportsmanship, making a commitment, teamwork, competition and cooperation, how to win and lose, and fair play are all valuable lessons that are taught by competing in athletics. Athletic participation also plays an important part in helping the individual student develop a healthy self-image as well as a healthy body. Participation on the interscholastic teams adds to our school spirit and helps all students, spectators and participants develop pride in their school.
