Dear Friends,

Welcome to the Development section of the Bullis Web site, and thank you for your interest in Bullis School. Our department oversees a wide range of advancement activities including: fundraising (annual fund, capital campaigns, endowment and planned giving), alumni affairs, events, communications and marketing.

Whether you are a parent, alumnus, grandparent or friend of the school, I extend my thanks and appreciation for your interest in supporting Bullis. As a leading independent school, we rely on the generosity of donors to provide essential funding that enables Bullis to offer superior educational programs and facilities.

Please take a few moments to explore our development Web pages. You will find information about our Annual Fund—the foundation of our philanthropic program—along with information about online giving and pledges; updates on our current Bullis Gala Auction, our yearly fund-raising event; and information on previous campaign successes and the School’s overall strategic plan.

If you have questions or thoughts to share about any Bullis advancement activities, or if you wish to join the ranks of Bullis donors and/or volunteers, please give me a call, e-mail me, or better yet, please stop by Founders’ Hall. My door is always open.  Bullis is an exciting, vibrant school, and it is a privilege to be a part of such a dynamic and successful institution. I look forward to meeting you and personally welcoming you to the Bullis campus.

With regards and appreciation,
Jim Ledyard, Director of Development

Bridging the Gap

Tuition revenue alone does not sustain the high quality of a Bullis education. Like other independent schools, we also rely on Annual Fund contributions, endowment income and fund-raising events to meet our annual operating costs.

Our largest source of nontuition revenue is the Annual Fund, which provides six percent of the annual operating budget. The Annual Fund sustains and improves Bullis, helping us field teams to “It’s Academic” and Model United Nations; bring new technology to classrooms; support faculty development; and enrich our curriculum with field trips, speakers and experiential learning.

Your gift helps Bullis fulfill its mission of providing co-educational college preparatory programs of excellence in a community that values integrity, respect, responsibility, diversity and service.

Giving to Bullis

Through gifts to the Annual Fund, our parents, grandparents, alumni, parents of alumni and friends show their support, in a concrete fashion, for the Bullis School’s mission. Both large gifts and modest ones matter, because all gifts demonstrate your confidence in our school. We hope that you will make Bullis a philanthropic priority this year and that our continuing success will matter most to you. Our goal is 100 percent participation in the Annual Fund.

You may give online by clicking here: Online Pledge Form. Or, you can mail your gift to us in care of the Development Office, Bullis School, 10601 Falls Road, Potomac, MD 20854. As always, we welcome your visits to our office to talk further about Bullis. Thank you for your generosity.

The Captain John Spencer Memorial Fund

A memorial fund has been established in honor of Captain John Spencer. “Captain Johnny,” as he was affectionately called at Bullis, was a Captain in the British Army, and served at Bullis for 34 years as a gifted mathematics teacher, an inspiring Middle School head, and a beloved icon of the Bullis community. He passed away on January 10, 2008 at the age of 91. John Spencer first came to Bullis as a math teacher in 1947. He became Middle School headmaster in 1957 and served in that capacity until his retirement in 1981. Mr. Spencer continued his involvement with the school as an exam proctor and tireless alumni fundraiser and, until this past June, personally attended the Middle School Recognition Assembly to present the John Spencer Citizenship Award to two eighth-grade students. He has been an honorary member of the Alumni Board since August 1998. Many years ago Mr. Spencer gave his wife Mickey a bulldog as a birthday gift and so began the longstanding tradition of a bulldog as the Bullis mascot. His personal collection of bulldog images and figurines is prominently displayed in Founders’ Hall. Mr. Spencer was a natural and devoted teacher, and was tremendously dedicated to Bullis School. He personified what Bullis stands for—its caring, committed connection to students and its community. His friendship touched our hearts, and his legacy still informs and reinforces the core values of our school. We strive to honor and continue that legacy. The Captain John Spencer Memorial Fund will benefit Middle School financial aid. Contributions may be made out to “Bullis School” and forwarded to Glenn Schwitter, Director of Development, Bullis School, 10601 Falls Road, Potomac, MD  20854.
