Parent Support
Volunteer support for the these activities is coordinated through the Development Office in partnership with the Parents Association.
The Annual Fund
Contributions to the Bullis School Annual Fund are used for the current operating expenses of our academic, athletic, artistic and extracurricular programs. Because our cost per student exceeds tuition, the Annual Fund is vital in helping to make up this difference. While capital and endowment gifts secure the future of Bullis, the Annual Fund provides for current needs and the excellence of today. Throughout the year, Annual Fund gifts from current parents, alumni, grandparents, alumni parents, faculty, staff and friends positively benefit our student body. Information regarding the various ways to give to the Annual Fund are distributed in the fall and are detailed on the Development Office pages of this Web site. Under the volunteer leadership of the Annual Fund chair and the parent volunteer committee, our plan is to raise $1,100,000 for the 2008–09 Annual Fund. Our goal is to have every parent make a meaningful gift to the Annual Fund. Along with many other parents, you can participate in the Annual Fund as both a supportive donor and a volunteer, as a class representative and/or through our phonathon efforts. If you have any questions, please feel free to call Jim Ledyard, director of development, at 301-983-5707 or contact him via e-mail at jim_ledyard@bullis.org, or Beth Lee, development associate, Annual Fund, at 301-983-5709 or via e-mail at beth_lee@bullis.org.
The Spring Gala
The Gala is the school’s largest annual fundraising event. Proceeds from the Gala help fund faculty professional development and student financial aid. The support generated at this event will help us to attract and retain the best teachers and assist those students who would otherwise not be able to attend Bullis School.
This year’s Gala is on March 6, 2009. Parent volunteers work in partnership with the Development Office to produce the Gala. Although the format may change from year to year, this all-school event includes silent and live auctions, as well as a festive evening featuring dinner and the chance to socialize with parents, faculty, staff, grandparents, alumni, alumni parents and friends. Parent volunteers support the Gala by soliciting and donating auction items, advertisements for the catalog and sponsorships. Your participation is integral to ensuring that we continue to provide the best for our teachers and students. Thank you in advance for your support, and we look forward to seeing you at Gala 2009!
To lend your support to the Gala, please contact Lynn Makris, events coordinator, lynn_makris@bullis.org or 301-983-5739.Label/Fundraising Event Requests
For specific grade-level label requests, please contact the appropriate grade-level administrative assistant, who will coordinate the production of the requested labels. For labels for the entire school, please contact Wendy Matuszky, Development Office associate, at 301-983-5715 or via e-mail at wendy_matuszky@bullis.org. Whenever possible, please consider “teaming up” on mailings to reduce clutter and postage expense.
Parents Association- and Student-Sponsored Fundraising
The Development Office, in conjunction with the head of school and Parents Association Board, has developed the following guidelines for fundraisers sponsored by student and Parents Association groups.
There are occasions when it is necessary and appropriate to raise money for classes, community service initiatives, teams and clubs to defray expenses not covered through our activity or operational budgets. These fundraisers aim to promote unity and spirit by creating opportunities for students, teachers and parents to work together to accomplish the goals at hand.Specific Fundraising Policies
- All fundraising efforts must be registered with the Development Office, and those with a goal of $1,000 or more will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis to determine where they best fit into the calendar. For these larger fundraisers, the goal is to have them registered by October 1 of the school year in which the funds will be solicited.
- The Development Office will be responsible for maintaining a calendar of all Bullis-related fundraising. This is to ensure that each group’s endeavors have the opportunity to succeed while protecting the Bullis community from over-solicitation. These activities will be spaced appropriately.
- The Development Office will be responsible for directing requests to and seeking input from appropriate school offices for relevant approvals. The following is a list of those offices that will be consulted to receive input and approvals:
- Development Office – Fundraising event registration and overall coordination
- Principals and Dean of Students – Input and general approval
- Business Manager, Business Office – Insurance and security
- Receptionist, Front Desk (Founders’ Hall) – Facility use
- Operations Manager, Buildings and Grounds – Maintenance support
- Athletic Director, Athletic Center Office – Athletic facility use
-
Fundraising activities and advertising of future fundraising events will be limited in the month preceding Gala as these would potentially impact the school and Parents Association efforts related to the Gala. The only exception to this rule will be the efforts of the Post Prom Committee.
-
Bullis School will not endorse or support students selling products door-to-door.
-
Bake sales and snack sales will occur before school, during H block and after school. Each activity needs approval of the applicable principal and must have a faculty sponsor.
-
Fundraising activities may use E-Train twice per event (outlined in the E-Train policy).
Thank you for your help and support in coordinating and organizing Bullis fundraising activities. If you have any questions about fundraising policies and guidelines, please contact Jim Ledyard in the Development Office, 301-983-5707.
