Welcome from the Head of School
September 2008
Dear Students and Parents:
Each year at Bullis we embrace a theme that challenges us to reach for new heights of effort and accomplishment. For this 2008-2009 school year, our theme is “Teamwork.”
Always the heart and soul of competitive athletics, teamwork is coming to be recognized as the key to 21st century success in every area. Despite the apparent counterexample of some amazing performances in this summer’s Olympic Games, the greatest solo performance of the exceptional individual is dwarfed by the achievements of a talented and cooperative group where dedication to an ambitious goal is shared by all.
As our Bullis faculty study the latest developments in teaching and learning, they are finding new ways to bring teamwork into the classroom, the science lab and the art studio. They know that today every great breakthrough in fields ranging from science and technology to the arts and humanities springs from a conversation rather than from a purely individual effort. It’s time, we believe, for schools to bring teamwork into all corners of the academy.
Part of the foundation for a successful team is the establishment of a set of ground rules for our work together. This Handbook describes these for our Bullis School community, and it is important that you know and observe the requirements outlined here. Clarity of expectations is part of the foundation for our most productive work together.
Sincerely yours,
Tom Farquhar
Head of School
