Summer Programs
Summer Studies: Full Credit Math Courses
To prepare a student to receive credit from his or her public or independent high school, a student receives up to 144 hours of instruction in 24 class meetings. Students enroll in these classes to take advantage of the small class size, extra instruction and experienced teachers.
Algebra I
This course is designed to develop students’ algebraic thinking through the introduction of algebraic concepts and skills, the use of technology, the discussion of mathematical ideas and the analysis of problems. Areas of study include real numbers, algebraic expressions, functions and relations, linear functions, linear inequalities, polynomials, systems, quadratic functions, statistics and data analysis.
Geometry
An integration of plane, solid and coordinate geometry is presented using both inductive and deductive modes of reasoning. Formal proof, measuring, construction and locus problems are studied. Topics include interrelationship of points, lines and planes, parallel lines, congruent triangles, quadrilateral polygons, similar triangles, circles, right triangle trigonometry, transformations, area and volume.
Algebra II
This course seeks to improve the level of algebraic sophistication of students by building on concepts introduced in earlier courses. Particular emphasis is placed on the study of functions and their usefulness in modeling data. The TI-82/83 calculator is used extensively both in learning about properties of functions and in using these functions to model data. In addition to linear and quadratic functions, students explore polynomial, exponential and logarithmic functions.
